This was an irresistible design/engineering puzzle. How to provide access, through an awkward skylight, onto a large roof deck in Notting Hill, without blocking the small landing and staircase below. The top three steps and a small turning landing are slung from the roof on a steel frame above head height. The straight flight from there down can be unhooked and hung on the wall, when not in use. The hand rails are fixed but out of the way. "The ultimate test was when the client went up and down with a tray of drinks in both hands to celebrate the completion!" If you like the Impossible access, do have a look at the Ash Stairs in work two. These were built on a similar principle but in a less cramped space. | ||||||
